Labour Policies under the Brexit Regime

Foreword

On the 23 June 2016 consultative referendum, 52% of votes went to the Brexit camp. A referendum is ‘consultative’ when it is meant to poll the voters and supply democratic institutions with the knowledge of the citizenry orientation on a particular subject. As such, a consultative referendum does not generate new legislation, whether through a further passage through the legislator or directly; nor it is a binding indication to the government to adopt actions or legislation in accord with the result of the referendum. It follows that Brexit was a choice of the Cameron Government. Everybody knows that Mr. Cameron, who had chosen to hold the referendum, has declined managing its aftermath. Mrs. Theresa May has taken over.

May, la Brexit e la brutta piega delle politiche del lavoro in UK

Premessa

Il 23 giugno 2016, il 52% dei votanti al referendum consultivo tenutosi in Gran Bretagna espresse la preferenza di abbandonare l’Unione Europea. La caratteristica di un referendum consultivo è quella di ‘sentire’ il parere popolare circa una determinata questione politica (in questo caso sull’uscita o meno dall’Unione Europea). La richiesta di un parere tramite questo tipo di referendum non è legalmente vincolante alla decisione successiva che verrà presa dal Governo. Ebbene chi (Cameron) ha ‘pianificato’ il referendum, ha anche deciso di non farsi carico di assecondare (o contraddire) l’opinione della maggioranza dei votanti. La scelta è stata lasciata al governo guidato da Theresa May.
